Suicide Bombing
In Northern Israel

Jerusalem/JTA — An Israeli police-
man was killed and at least two people
injured when a suicide bomber struck
near a bus stop in northern Israel.
The blast went off during afternoon
rush hour on a highway outside the
Israeli Arab town of Umm el-Fahm,
which is several miles from Afula. The
bomber walked up to a police car,
exchanged several words with several
policemen, then detonated the explo-
sives strapped to his body.
Police arrived on the scene in a van
after receiving an anonymous phone call
about a suspicious-looking man standing
near a bus stop. It was the first suicide
attack since Aug. 4, when a bomber blew
himself up on a bus traveling from Haifa
to Safed, killing himself and nine Israelis.
The attack came after Israel turned down
a Palestinian offer to halt attacks on civil-
ians as the first stage of a gradual truce.

New York/JTA — A member of Al
Qaida was identified as one of the killers
of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel
Pearl, according to the Associated Press.

The identification was made by a
Pakistani held, but not charged in the
January kidnapping of Pearl, who was
killed earlier this year after admitting to
his Jewish roots in a video made by his
abductors. If the identification proves
true, it would mark the first time that
Al Qaida was linked to Pearl's death.

Stamp Issued

Washington/JTA — The U.S. Postal
Service issued a stamp honoring song-
writer Irving Berlin.
Berlin wrote more than 1,000 songs,
including "God Bless America." Berlin
was born Israel Beilin on May 11,
1888, in Russia. He died 101 years
later in New York.

Israel Angered
Shoe Bomber

Washington/JTA — A man accused of
trying to blow up a plane last year
with explosives in his shoes said he
was driven by anger over Israel's treat-
ment of Muslims.
Richard Reid, a British citizen and
convert to Islam, told FBI interrogators
he traveled to Jerusalem in June 2001
and was angered to see "Jews with guns"
at the Al-Aksa Mosque, an apparent ref-
erence to Israeli police guarding the
entrance to the Temple Mount.
Reid said his trip to Jerusalem "further
emboldened him to act against the West
when he witnessed the many checkpoints
and travel restrictions on Muslims,"
according to an interrogation transcript.
He is charged with trying to detonate
explosives on an American Airlines flight
from Paris to Miami last December.

Pro-Israel Ads
Hit The Air

New York/JTA — TV ads trumpeting
Israeli democracy and its common val-
ues with the United States are hitting
the nation's cable stations.
The 30-second ads, which the
American Jewish Committee is sponsor-
ing, began running on CNN, CNBC,
Fox News and MSNBC in the
Washington area Sept. 12, and they were
set to hit the New York market on CNN
and Fox, an AJCommittee official said.
The ads, which should air nationally in
the next few weeks, are part-of a major
pro-Israel public relations campaign by
