he first day of school is a milestone for a child, a
parent and a teacher. I've experienced the first day
of school as all three. It's a rush of emotions —
exhilarating and traumatic, exciting and nostalgic.
But, I must confess ... sometimes it's downright scary.
As a child, I remember walking into kindergarten at
MacCulloch school in Detroit. I remember my brother, who is
six years older than I, telling me how much fun kindergarten
would be, and then warning me about all the mean teachers.
I can still hear my daughter's screams on her first day at
Shaarey Zedek Beth Hayeled Nursery School in Southfield,
but felt reassured when Mrs. Meyers gently talked to her and
walked with her to the floor seating area.
I was the substitute Spanish teacher who never left at
Thompson Junior High, and I then followed many of my stu-
dents to Southfield Lathrup High School.
So I experienced "first days" from all per-
spectives.
Since it's the September issue of Style
at the Jewish News, meet five students
whose "first days" span the milestones
of nursery school, kindergarten, middle
school, high school and college. And
check out all the gear the kids will be
asking for this year.
We also spotlight Alan Green, a
college student and T-ball coach who
hopes to transfer his leadership skills
to the rabbinate one day. And meet
artist Lauren Riback, whose expertise with a
needle and thread has blossomed into a growing Style at the Jewish
