there was no occupation. The Arabs controlled Gaza and the West Bank. Two major wars were started by the Arabs to destroy the state of Israel. After the Six-Day War, the late Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir invited the Arab League to enter negotiations for a peace- ful resolution. The answer was the "Khartoum Three No's." The Oslo Peace Process was designed to establish a Palestinian Entity. "Land for Peace" [meant] Israel gave up land. Yasser Arafat was to prepare his people for peaceful coexistence. Contrary to the agreement, Arafat stoked the hatred toward Israel and the Jews and held out hope for eventual destruction of the State of Israel. At Camp David, in the year 2000, Arafat was offered 97 percent of Gaza and the West Bank. Without a coun- teroffer, Arafat left the negotiations and started Intifada Joseph N. Epel Orchard Lake Angelic Smile, Beloved Torah Staff Writer Shelli Liebman Dorfman's magnificent tribute to Ira Boykansky on erev Rosh Hashanah ("L'Shanah Tovah!" Sept. 6, page 14), coupled with his angelic smile while clutching his beloved Torah, revealed to each one of us that sincere belief in a power greater than ourselves can, and will, make life a wonderful experience. My late mother, Esther, while a resi- dent of Detroit's Borman Hall, intro- duced my family to Ira. She was inspired by his dedication to making the most of every day and his com- plete commitment to God and to Judaism. She loved helping him with the tasks of daily living and he responded by always being the con- summate mentsh. Ira's impact on me and my family made us all appreciate the true mean- ing of life. He has lived with a diffi- cult physical challenge, but he has never argued with his Creator about this problem. He is the constant focus of a loving and dedicated family, a multitude of friends and a community that cherishes his being. Each day is a new opportunity for Ira to offer prayers and to be in shul. Now we are positive that one of his special prayers has been answered. Ira with his Torah — what a beautiful moment in the life of a beautiful man. Robert A.
