Meir Banooni and Eli Shalom, synagogue president, both of West Bloomfield, carry
Torot to the new Keter Torah building.

safely in the ark that the building was
ready to receive its guests.
"I've traveled all over the world and
every time I go into a Sephardic syna-
gogue, I say, 'Why not us?"' says Shirley
Behar of Southfield, past president of
Keter Torah. "I did everything humanly
possible to help bring that same pleasure
to my own community."
For Behar's family, the dream of the
building began before she was even
born. Her parents Jacob and Judith
Chicorel, who immigrated from Turkey,
founded the Sephardic Community of
Detroit in 1917.
From that time on, Detroit's
Sephardic community has held services
in sites from the Labor Zionist building
in Detroit and the Jewish Community
Center in Oak Park to the former

Congregation Beth Achim in Southfield
and, most recently, a storefront in West
Bloomfield.
For Behar, the Sept. 5 Torah-welcom-
ing ceremony that brought 125 partici-
pants — including the synagogue's new
rabbi, Michael Cohen and his family —
"was everything I dreamed of my whole
life," she says. "Having everyone in the
building's courtyard, dancing and
singing and bringing the Torahs into our
own shul is the realization of a dream."
Synagogue Corresponding Secretary
Susan Alspector says: "Now our build-
ing is complete. Everyone will know we
exist and have existed all these years.
Having the Torahs in the ark is a beauti-
ful culmination of a lot of years of plan-
ning. We finally have a shul built for the
Sephardic community." ❑

Steve,

I can not thank you enough for the wonderful job you did at our son
Michael's bar mitzvah. Your enthusiasm and spark energized the
crowd. The special attention you gave Michael allowed him to
have a night he will always remember.
