Just recently, a 15-year-old boy was able to fly a plane smack into a high-rise building in Tampa, Fla., proving again that there has not been any real progress in preventive measures except for a lot of talk. Support Fink For Congress As a strong supporter of and longtime advocate for the State of Israel, I urge my friends to support David Fink in the 9th district congressional race. Both David Fink and U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg are strongly pro-Israel in word and deed. David Fink has served the Jewish community as a member of and advis- er to Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, the Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit, the Michigan Jewish Conference and the Michigan kosher food bank Yad Ezra. He is a longtime fund-raiser for Israel and a member of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and the National Jewish Democratic Council. David has long demonstrated his support for Israel and has earned our support. His energy, passion and desire to serve for the long term would pro- vide Israel and the local. Jewish com- munity with an important congres- sional advocate for years to come. Marvin Novick Oak Park Knollenberg A Friend To Israel 41.1' 9/13 2002 6 A few weeks ago, I joined about a score of leaders of the Michigan Association of CPAs for a breakfast meeting to meet with U.S. Joe Knollenberg, R-Bloomfield Hills, for the first time. After an attendee asked him why we should support his reelection bid, the congressman immediately said that not only did he help to lead the support for Israel in Congress, but he had the seniority on the proper The answer lies in the NASA Missile Program. If you notice when a test mis- sile runs astray, for the safety of all, a button is activated by remote control and instantly the missile blows up before hitting anything. Similarly, all airlines can have imbed- ded in their planes these little red boxes that no pilot or terrorists can get to while the plane is in flight. All major buildings, like the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building and United Nations Building in New York City, the John Hancock Tower in Chicago, the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and all other major structures in appropriation committees to imple- ment this support into action. I believe Jewish voters in his dis- trict should recognize the benefits that the congressman's strong friend- ship to Israel can bring to all of us. Alan Reinstein Farmington Hills Israel Is Not The Only Voting Issue As the election season comes into full force with the passing of summer and the Labor Day holiday, I am seriously troubled by those in the Detroit and national Jewish community who urge that we allow concern over Israel to trump, in the words of a recent Jewish News letter writer, American domestic issues ("Rep. Knollenberg Deserves Our Vote," Aug. 30, page 6). As American Jews, we must be true first and foremost to America. It is the domestic policies that this great nation has given us through constitutional and legislated right that allows us the freedoms we have in America. To sug- gest that concerns over Israel's survival are more important than domestic concerns, only raises the specter that Jews are less than loyal to America. There is no reason to even propose an "either-or" scenario in the central Oakland County congressional race, as both the incumbent congressman and his Democratic challenger are strongly in Israel's corner. Please remember that our day-to- day lives in the U.S. are decided by those we elect in November. As such, make Israel a part of the electoral equation, but never let it "trump" the domestic agenda. Marshall S. Solomon West Bloomfield Washington, D.C., and even our major bridges in the country, should be equipped with these electronic units. So if any airline approached on a collision course that cannot be avoided, the sys- tem would automatically activate the red box to blow up, saving possibly thou- sands of people, unlike at the World Trade Center in New York City. Irving Handelman Oak Park JVS: Worthy Of Support Thanks for writing such a nice article about JVS and the upcoming benefit [Saturday, Sept. 14, Fox Theatre, Detroit] starring Jay Leno ("King Of Late Night," Sept. 6, page 138). I always have said that if you love your job, you will never work another day in your life. Recently, I was in Los Angeles to visit one of our customers. That evening, they took me to see Jay Leno do a live taping of the Tonight Show. I enjoyed the show, but what really impressed me was seeing how much Jay Leno enjoyed his work both on and off the camera. Helping people find and enjoy work, whatever their ability, is exactly what JVS has done for thousands of metro Detroiters. JVS is a Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit agency and I am happy that our Annual Campaign gift helps such an effective organization. Our best wishes to JVS for a successful fund- raiser starring Jay Leno. Joel E. Jacob ers — lots of people — but few tourists. The trip to the William Davidson Center, located at the southwest corner of the Temple Mount, was a highlight. The center, built by Bill Davidson of our area, with contributions by other philanthro- pists from greater Detroit, describes the excavations of the large southern area of the Mount. There, one can wander in the mikvot (ritual baths) and see the irrigation that was used in the time of the Temple and view the doors going into the Temple, as well as numerous other sights. There is a movie depicting one as if approaching the Temple area to make a sacrifice. It is wonderful. There were many other wonderful sights to see within the Jerusalem area. Did we see security? Yes! More than we have seen at other times, but just another nuisance. Business and restaurants were closed, but there are still many in busi- ness. Israel needs you! It is a wonderful place to visit. Seymour and Phyllis Subar West Bloomfield Ads Help Influence Public Opinion Regarding your editorial "Selling Israel" (Aug. 30, page 37) that equated running ads in the press or on TV to marketing Israel "as if it were a hamburger or a home improvement store," ads have his- torically been used to present a position when a group feels that it is not receiv- ing proper coverage in the traditional president andfiunder, the Bottle Crew news medium.
