2003 CHEVY BLAZER
Lawrence Jackier
Robert Aronson
guished service representing the highest
ideals of Jewish communal leadership.
Referring to Naftaly's commitment
to providing Jewish learning for chil-
dren and adequate assistance to the
elderly, Rabbi Daniel Nevins of Adat
_Shalom called him a man "who has
demonstrated time and again that self=
less dedication to the needy and to the
young is a noble and holy enterprise."
After thanking nearly all of the 275
people in the room, Naftaly said, "I
am honored that my community has
picked a kid from Dexter and old
Central High School. It's -hard -to
believe that a kid could come from
there to be included and add his name
to the Butzel Award.
"I stand before you on the shoulders
of — metaphorically on the shoulders
of, so, don't get nervous — all those
who preceded me in this most distin-
guished group of men and women.
They have been leaders, mentors, col-
leagues, trusted partners, treasured
friends — individuals who have had
enormous impact on our community,
and yes, on the world. I am proud to
have my name added'to theirs."
In his speech, Naftaly joked that his
first Federation donation of $25 was
much bigger than Franklin philanthro-
pist Max Fisher's first gift of $5 back
in the 1940s.
Naftaly then urged others to help
the community. "Everybody is seek-
ing more purpose in their lives, seek-
ing more meaning to their lives,"
Naftaly said. "One avenue to reach
that purpose and that meaning is to
work in service to your community."
Looking forward, he said, "In these
difficult times, there is a push by
some to cut back, retrench and these
are understandable reactions to the
[sagging stock] market. We will look
ahead, be forward thinking and con-
tinue to build and _invest in our com-
munity." ❑
