Memorial

Blessings for our country, a hope for
peace and a look to God for support
came in the form of a Sept. 10 musi-
cal tribute to victims of 9-11 and
Israeli terror.
"I sang songs with words that
exactly fit the occasion of a memorial
service," says Cantor David Gutman
of Congregation Beit Kodesh in
Livonia. In a program narrated by
Rabbi Avie Shapiro of the Jewish
Hospice and Chaplaincy Network in
Southfield and accompanied by
pianist Martin Mandelbaum, the
cantor chose his selections to allow
reflection and comfort for those
attending the Cantorial Memorial
event in which he was featured.
"The words in the songs have a
close relationship to what's happen-
ing in the world right now," says
Louise Lazarus of West Bloomfield, a
singer who attended the program at
the Jewish Community Center in
Oak Park.
"When we sing the words of 'AM
Maamim,' which means, 'I believe
with complete faith,' once sung by -
Jews in concentration camps, it
means we still believe in God,"
Cantor Gutman says. "The song 'Eli
Eli' tells how God did not abandon
us, and `Oseh Shalom' tells how God
shall make peace for us on Earth."
The song the cantor chose to con-
clude the program was an appropri-
ate selection -- Israel's national
anthem, "Hatikvah," meaning "The
