While people may not have known their names, everyone knew the 'Hat Lady' — who never wore the same hat twice. On Sept. 1, 2001, Anne Heitman of Southfield, wife of the late Philip Heitman and the 'Hat Lady' of Adat Shalom, died at age 88. Mrs. Helfman had two loves in her life: her family and her philanthropic work. Her family knew her as a loving mother, bubbe and sister — a woman who spoke her mind and always watched over her six younger brothers and sisters, no matter their age. Mrs. Helfman was a supporter of Adat Shalom and the State of Israel, as well as many other charities. The couple were founding members of Adat Shalom, and Mrs. Helfman was the first woman on the board of directors and in 1951, the first woman on the board of trustees. She was also the 1950 Sisterhood president, oversee- ing the building of the main sanctuary. Mrs. Helfman was a tireless fund-raiser for Israel, giving boundless energy to Israel Bonds efforts. She was the chair- woman of the Women's Division of Detroit-Israel Bonds, 1957-1959, and the sponsor chairwoman of Israel Bonds. She was twice named Woman of Valor for her work, as well as a member of the Prime Minister's Club, receiving an award from Prime Minister GOIda Mein A MARION AUSLANDER, 85, of Ft.
