... "Your article on the Bagel restaurant
brought back memories. One of Martin
Eichelbaum's sons, Marv, was a fraternity
brother of mine and this was one of our
hangouts after school, meetings and late
evenings in the late 1950s and early
1960s.
"Both father and son were characters
in different ways. In another life Martin
could have'been a pro wrestler or a
nightclub bouncer. If any of the gang*
got out of line Martin wouldn't hesitate
to pick us up and throw us out on the
street.
"One of the funniest stories hap-
pened when Martin put in a purchase
order for 100 boxes of matches (custom
made in the shape of a bagel). Several
days later a truck pulled up to the front
entrance and the driver began wheeling
in boxes on top of boxes. It seemed that
the person at the match company mis-
read the PO and added two zeros to
the 100, resulting in 10,000 boxes of
matches with a bill corresponding to
the quantity.
"Not only did Martin threaten the
driver, but the newspapers and TV
reporters got wind of the story. The pic-
ture in the paper had Martin with the
look of a wrestler about to enter the ring
with Man' behind him laughing. On
