"I am happy to stay connected to
the art and artists in this town, my
hometown," says Goodman, who
graduated from Oak Park High School
and earned a certificate and bachelor's
degree from CCS. "My passion is oil
paint, and I have spent 40 years exper-
imenting with it."
Before devoting herself to painting,
Goodman tried her hand in sculpture
while living in the Cass Corridor in
the 1970s. The drawing that will be
on display anticipated one of her
three-dimensional projects.
During the same time period that
Goodman was working in Detroit, the
Silvermans became interested in this
phase of artistry, but it all started on a
trip to Japan, where they saw an
installation by Sol Lewitt.
"It dawned on me that Lewitt prob-
ably had never gone to visit the space
and direct the placement of the instal
lation," explains Silverman, who is
showcasing work by several Jewish
artists but not Jewish subjects. "I
decided that he had probably looked
at photographs of the space and then
had written and drawn out instruc-
tions so others could install the work.

I really liked that.
"After giving this some thought, I
decided that the idea leading to the
creation of a work of art is either the
most important part or at least a very
important part of the artwork. This
essentially would be the artist's think-
ing process, as opposed to the actual
painting or sculpture, and [each pre-
liminary piece works to] bridge the
gap between the flash of an idea and
the completed work."

Acting on his collecting instincts,
Silverman contacted Lewitt and asked
if he would sell his instructions. After
the deal was struck, Silverman went
on to poke around the back rooms of
dealers and found things that they, at
that time, did not place in great value.
As the couple gained more and more
of these pieces, they found that other
collectors also were becoming interest-
ed in the field.
"This exhibit celebrates the
Silvermans as innovative collectors and:
also as supporters of cultural institu-
tions in Michigan," says Center
Galleries director Michelle Perron,
who learned. about this collection
through a catalogue from a European
show. "I've known the Silvermans for
many years, and I wanted to recognize
their generosity while offering a special
education opportunity for CCS stu-
dents."
The Silverman collection keeps
growing. As recently as August, they
purchased• a sheet with doodles by the
late painter-sculptor Lucio Fontana.
"I've really had to ferret out these
drawings," Silverman says. "But part
of the fun of collecting has been the
chase and traveling to find different
pieces." ❑
