Silverman Collection, on
view Sept. 14-Oct. 12,
showcases sketches and tex-
tual instructions document-
ing the thinking processes
of more than 50 contempo-
rary artists.
Gilbert Silverman will
speak about the exhibited
items and his interest in
them at noon Thursday,
Sept. 26, in the gallery, and
New York artist Michele
Oka Doner will give her
perspective at 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Walter B.
Ford II Building.
The Silvermans, who have amassed
a diverse assortment of paintings and
sculpture; have kept these background
materials locked away in their home
until recently, when curiosity about
them have led to shows in America
and Europe.
Center Galleries, affiliated with the
College for Creative Studies (CCS),
seemed an especially appropriate venue

because it offered students a chance to
understand how the masters
approached their own projects.
"I'm a civil engineer and real estate
developer used to working from draw-
ings, and I think the CCS students
will share my feelings and interest in
these because of their similar experi-
ences," says Gilbert Silverman, who
plans on devoting much of his formal
presentation as a response to audience
questions.

who will speak
about instruction
drawings from
his collection on
Sept. 26

Collecting Instincts

The Silvermans' extensive collection,
which includes preliminary pieces by
Alexander Calder, Alex Katz and
Doner, also features a drawing by
Brenda Goodman, a New York
abstract painter who developed her
skills in Detroit and has returned to
showcase her own projects and serve as
a juror for other shows.
