British comedian SACHA BARON
COHEN has been rapped by that
country's Jewish leaders, who want
him to drop his ALI G character.
Cohen, who created the spoof gang-
ster rapper for Britain's comedy pro-
gram The Eleven 0' Clock Show, took
Ali G to the big screen this year with
his hit flick Ali G Indahouse.
But it seems not everyone is amused
by the Jewish funnyman's routine. Rabbis
in the United Kingdom say the 32-year-
old's act is "offensive" and an "embarrass-
ment" to their faith, as violence contin-
ues in the Middle Fast.

RABBI SHAUL
ROSENBLATT, of Aish
UK — which represents
young British Jews — says,
"He should drop the char-
acter. It is not appropriate."

she says. "It's weird but, when something
is such a giant success, you gotta pay big
bucks for it on many levels."
Karen, who played Stephanie
Mangano in the film, also
reveals she didn't get along
with Travolta.
She says, "We're from differ-
ent backgrounds. I'm a classi-
cally trained actress. I do Shaw;
I do Shakespeare. I don't think
our interests connect."
She hasn't seen her dimple-
chinned co-star since the film.
She says, "He wasn't my

and he can't play the piano." .

ARTHUR, RUE
McCLANAHAN and
BETTY WHITE showed
their support to frail fellow
Golden Girl ESTELLE
GETTY as she celebrated her 79th
birthday recently.
Ten years after their hit TV sitcom
went off air, the three actresses are ral-
lying around ailing Estelle, who suffers
from Alzheimer's disease and osteo-
porosis, and sometimes can't even
remember the faces of loved ones.
Bea says, "Estelle is not well. It's very
distressful. I had lunch with her recently.
She knows me, but she goes in and out."
Earlier this summer, Estelle was the
guest of honor at a party held at her
Hollywood condominium. Both Bea
and Rue, who were working in New
York at the time, sent large bouquets
of flowers and good wishes. Betty
attended the bash.
But, a source explains, "Sadly,
Estelle didn't seem to know Betty.
"Everybody loves Estelle, so it's very
sad for Bea, Rue and Betty to see her in
such a fragile state. They all make a point
to keep in touch with her, even though
she has trouble remembering them."

JOHN TRAVOLTA's Saturday Night
Fever co-star KAREN LYNN GOR-
NEY has struggled to find work since
she was featured in the hit 1977 film.
While Travolta has largely gone from
strength to strength despite a few mem-
orable career dips, Gorney has found

finding Hollywood roles almost impos-
sible — and she blames the success of
the disco-era movie for her downfall.
The Jewish actress — whose father,
songwriter JAY GORNEY, wrote the
Depression-era tune "Brother, Can
You Spare a Dime?" — was even writ-
ten out of the sequel Staying Alive.
"If I hadn't got Saturday Night Fever, I
probably would have worked a lot more,"

Israeli magical mystery man URI
GFI I .RR has spoken out about his
friendship with MICHAEL JACKSON.
He describes the time when the pop
icon visited a record store on London's
Oxford Street and spoke to a fan's
mother on his mobile phone as a typi-
cal example of Jackson's good nature.
He says, "A young wan was jostled
to the front of the crowd. He was
yelling, 'Michael Jackson is right in
front of me. I wish you could see him!'
"And Michael reached out gently,
took the phone and whispered, 'Hi
who is this? Yes, really, this is me.'
"I heard him say, 'I love you more,'
•and then he handed back the phone."
Geller was introduced to Jackson by .
Egyptian-born London-based busi-
nessman MOHAMED AL FAYED.
He says, "I had been unconsciously
prepared for facial scars, even deformi-
ty, because of the constant drip-drip of
lies and slanders.
"In fact, his face is strong and serene
and his skin is beautiful — shining,
almost translucent. He glows with an
aura of energy.
"I knew at this moment that I had
found a lifelong friend."
