The Pioneers

U or those who remember Sinai Hospital as the premiere Jewish medical
facility in Detroit, it's hard to imagine that such a renowned teaching
hospital started with just 11 interns willing to take a chance on the new and
then-unapproved facility.
Dr. Gerald Mandell, a pathologist, was one of those young doctors who
signed on under the leadership of Dr. Julien Priver, who was Sinai Hospital's
director for more than 30 years. Dr. Priver now lives in San Diego with his
wife, Dorothy.

The Schlussels: Living That Dream

any young women dream about their wedding day and the life
that will follow and, for Rose Lynn (Rosie) Schlussel, her life
has been a continuous fulfillment of that dream.
At 20 years old, I dreamed of getting married, having children,
making a home," said Schlussel, "and, almost 40 years later, here we
are.
In addition to supporting her husband, Mark, in his many
activities, and raising their four children, Schlussel has made her own
name in the Jewish community.
She received the prestigious United Way "Heart of Gold Award" 11
years ago for her extensive volunteer work with the National Council
of Jewish Women (NCJW), which included chairing the "Meals on
Wheels" program that home-delivers kosher meals daily to hundreds of people throughout metro
Detroit.
Currently, Schlussel volunteers with the Auxiliary for the Home for the Aged at the Fleischman
Residence in West Bloomfield. She also serves on the board of Jewish Family Service and is a life
member of NCJW, Hadassah and Bar-Ilan University.
But, according to Schlussel, her greatest accomplishments to date are her six grandchildren, who
range in age from 2 months to 5 years.
"I'm very lucky to have all of them here in town, and I know it," she said.
Rosie and her husband live in Southfield, where they are active members of Young Israel of
Southfield. Mark has served as president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, and
chairman of the board of Sinai Hospital; he currently chairs the Jewish Fund, and is active in many
other Jewish communal organizations. He is an attorney with the firm of Warner, Norcroff and Judd,
which has offices in Southfield and Grand Rapids.
"I have always `levelled' at my husband's accomplishments," Rosie said.
