ecoming the first woman president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
was something Penny Bernstein never expected when her engagement to Harold
Blumenstein was announced in the Jewish News in 1958.
"I am astounded that my life turned out the way it did," said Blumenstein, who served as
Federation president from 1998 through 2001. "I always thought I'd be an
Indian, not a chief.

Blumenstein led the third Miracle Mission to Israel and served as
chairperson of the Millenium Campaign for Detroit's Jewish Future, which
was responsible for raising more than $58 million for the Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan Detroit as well as other local organizations.
In addition to her extensive involvement in the Detroit Jewish community,
Blumenstein is a board member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the
United Way.
"Participating in the community is a wonderful way to give back," she said.

Rabbi Vilton Arm:

Back A gain For Good

hen Rabbi Milton Arm came to Detroit for a
temporary stay in 1954, he never expected his visit
to last this long.
"Originally I had planned to stay for nine months, to fill
in for Rabbi (Morris) Adler while he went on sabbatical
from Congregation Shaarey Zedek," said Rabbi Arm, "but I
became like the Man Who Came to Dinner."
Rabbi Arm stayed at Shaarey Zedek until 1959, when he
was asked to take over the pulpit of Congregation Ahavas
Achim. He remained there until 1964, when he accepted
the position of assistant to the president of the Jewish
National Fund in New York. Two years later, at the request
of his former congregants, he returned, this time to stay.
Rabbi Arm served Ahavas Achim, which later relocated to
Southfield and was renamed Congregation Beth Achim,
after its merger with Congregation Beth Aaron, until his
retirement in 1990.
Rabbi Arm, who is 78, lives in West Bloomfield with his
wife of 53 years, Claire. They have three children, 10
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
