Danny Raskin at
the new Jewish
News office.
f there's one constant in 60 years at the Jewish News, it's columnist
Danny Raskin. His byline appeared in Vol. 1 No. 1 on March 27,
1942 — and in every issue since.
The "Jewish Youth's Listening Post" was his first weekly column; it
offered updates on area Jews fighting in World War II. Then he added
"The Best of Everything," which highlighted people and places in the
restaurant and entertainment business
around Detroit. The two were combined
in the early 1990s.
The weekly column remains one of the
most popular features in the Jewish News,
according to periodic Simmons Research
studies.
"Danny is a Detroit institution," said
Arthur M. Horwitz, publisher of the
Jewish News. He is the last of a breed of
columnists whose content is enjoyed by
multiple generations of readers. His
passion remains keen for informing and
entertaining an appreciative audience."
Raskin came to theiNwith journalism
experience. He wrote sports for the
Lansing State Journal and was a cub
reporter on the midnight beat at city hall
for the Detroit News. He started at theN
working part-time only because he says he
wanted to make sure the new publication
would make it.
He started at age 23; now he's 83.
But you wouldn't know it to look at
him. Tall and lean and a dapper dresser,
Raskin looks and acts much younger. His
energetic demeanor and his gift for
storytelling are characteristics that benefit
his column.
Raskin has one rule for writing his "The
0
0
Best of Everything" column: "I never
knock the restaurants. Some of these
owners have their mortgage in these
places. I will tell the owner privately if I
don't like something."
Raskin continues to visit three or four restaurants each week, but says,
"I don't write about them all." He has no plans to retire.
For 60 years, Danny Raskin has been an anchor at theN both to
readers and to staffers. He's the embodiment of our history.
