Sklar, a board member at Temple Israel, had been a managing editor at the Observer & Eccentric newspapers in suburban Detroit. In February of 2000, Horwitz teamed with New York philanthropist and Jewish community activist Michael Steinhardt to form Jewish Renaissance Media LLP (JRM) and purchase the Detroit and Atlanta papers and Detroit's Style magazine. JRM has established Web sites for both newspapers, purchased Jewish.com and begun a news service for other Jewish newspapers. The major event in the Jewish News' recent history was the Jan. 27 fire that destroyed the Franklin Road building housing the paper's administrative, production, circulation and sales offices. A connecting building, which housed editorial, Style and Web site offices, suffered water damage. Fire officials said the fire started in electrical wiring. The fire forced the newspaper to move to temporary facilities in JARC's new headquarters on Northwestern Highway in Farmington Hills. But the Jewish News was published on Friday, Feb. 1, and Sharon, Carmi, Anna and Phil Slomovitz at the Butzel every Friday thereafter, continuing a 60-year, Award presentation to the 3,120-week record of reflecting the hopes, fears, Jewish News publisher in simchot and dreams of the Jewish community of 1982. metropolitan Detroit. •20O1 The partnership, named Jewish Renaissance Media, adds the Web site Jewish.com to its holdings. Arthur Horwitz and Michael Steinhardt form a partnership to purchase the Detroit Jewish News and Style magazine, and the Atlanta Jewish Times.
