ALAN HITS KY Associate Editor ewish teen athletes from the metropolitan Detroit area participated in JCC Maccabi Games in Nebraska, Maryland, Ontario and Massachusetts in August. The following results were report- ed by the coaches or delegation heads. More results were published Aug. 30. 13-14 Boys Basketball: Preliminary games: Monmouth-44 Detroit 42, Detroit 48 Montreal 44, Sephardic (Brooklyn) 61 Detroit 40, Detroit 61 Northern Virginia 22. In the Montreal win, we were behind by 7 with 2 1 /, minutes left and staged a spirited comeback. It was led by Mitch Weiss, who scored 12 points in the last quarter, including six clutch free throws down the stretch. This was our first win and very thrilling for the boys." In the medal round, Detroit was defeated by South Jersey by more than 30 points. The team's leading scorers for the week were Mitchell Weiss and Sammy Faye. The Detroit players wore a memo- rial strip on their jerseys for Zachary Talon Edelson, who was a team member before his drowning death in June. Before the first game, the players said words of remembrance for him in the team huddle. "One day between games, Weiss said, "I was walking the team back to the JCC from the gym where we played (about four blocks away). The route took us through a neigh- borhood where many older Jewish people live. "As we walked down the sidewalk dressed in our uniforms, an elderly man stopped us and asked in an 'old country' accent, 'Are you with the Maccabi Games?' I replied that we were, and he asked, And you are all Jewish?' Again, I said yes. "His eyes lit up and he held out his arms to us, exclaiming, `God bless you. God bless you.' He explained that he is a sur- vivor of the Holocaust, born in Romania. He watched his par- ents dig their own graves before being shot by the Nazis. He survived the camps and made it to Montreal after the war. "In tears, he said to the boys, `This is so wonderful. You are the future. God bless all of you.' It was emblematic of the Maccabi spirit and very touch- ing to me, and I hope made a lasting impression on the boys."
