compensation. Applicants must still
meet the eligibility requirements of hav-
ing spent six months in a concentration
camp, or 18 months in a ghetto or in
hiding under cruel conditions.
"No matter when they have filed
under the Hardship Fund, no one is
closing these cases," emphasizes
Wildstrom. "If the new guidelines help
or their financial situation has changed
since they filed, we can help by helping
them show current financial need with
a 1040 tax form and a Social Security
statement. If they never filed but have
changed their minds about doing so, it
is not too late to start the process."
Wildstrom estimates there are 3,000
survivors still alive in metropolitan
Detroit, with international estimates
pegged at more than 800,000. Most
local survivors are between the ages of
76 and 92 and, as one would expect,

making them unable to certify an
application. Demands for documenta-
tion, often lost or destroyed decades
ago, also hamper survivors' efforts to
file claims.
There is no firm figure of local sur-
vivors receiving compensation.

Jewish Material Claims Against
Germany estimates 53,000 survivors
have been approved. 111
