The Board of Directors and •Staff of fling of the year, his good fortune likewise sleeps." • The day immediately following Rosh Hashanah is Tzom Gedaliah. This is one of four fasts in the Jewish year that begins at sunrise and ends at sundown (as opposed to Yom Kippur and Tisha b'Av, which are 24-hour fasts). The fast commemorates the mur- der of Gedaliah ben Achikam, gov- ernor of Israel in the time of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia. Nebuchadnezzar not only attacked and destroyed much of Israel (including the sacred Temple sanctu- ary), he exiled virtually the entire Jewish population there — except for a few, including the man he appointed as governor, Gedaliah ben Achikarn. A rival king ordered the assassina- tion of Gedaliah. The hired hitman was Yishmael ben Netaniah, a Jew. In their decision to institute a fast day in Gedaliah's memory, the rabbis said, "The death of the righteous is likened to the burning of the house of God." A theme of the day, then, is a Jewish community divided; in this case,-a Jew was murdered and his killer was another Jew. In honor of Tzom Gedaliah, con- sider one way in which you could extend kindness to another Jew out- side your usual circle of friends and acquaintances. • Make some creative placemats for your Rosh Hashanah dinner table. Enlarge and photocopy a favorite photo of your child. Then let your daughter make decorations — per- haps a hat cut from felt, or earrings out of rhinestones — to affix to the picture for a special holiday look. • Write your children "birthday" let- ters, for the celebration_ of the birth- day of the world. Write a love letter telling your child what it is that you love, admire and respect so much about him. Include favorite stories, and perhaps a photo or other sou- venir. • Serve your family fortune cookies with happy fortunes for the future: Here's an easy recipe: GOOD FORTUNE COOKIES 1/2 cup sugar 2 egg whites 1/4 cup melted margarine 1/4 cup all-purpose flour pinch salt 1/4 t. vanilla Prepare fortunes in advance, writ- ten on paper that measures 2 1 /2 by 1 /, inches. You'll need 15 fortunes to match the number of cookies this recipe makes). Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Coat a baking sheet with a non-stick spray like Pam. In a mixing bowl, stir the sugar with the egg whites. Add the salt. When the sugar is dissolved, add the margarine, flour and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Drop the batter, one teaspoon at a time, onto a baking pan. Make sure each cookie is about 2 inches apart. Bake five minutes. For children cooking, have an adult transfer the cookies to a cutting board. While the cookies are still warm, place a prepared fortune slip in the center of the circle. Fold each cookie over to make a semicircle, then fold over a bowl to shape and cool. Remember, cookies can be folded only when still warm, so you'll have to work fast. Should the cookies become inflexible, return them to the oven for a minute to warm up again. • Make a bookmark to hold your place in your holiday prayer book. Ask your child to decorate it with pictures of apples and honey. • Learn all about apples, the favorite food of this holiday, by reading the book Apples by Ken Robbins (Atheneum Press; 2002). (Do you know, for example, how long it takes for an apple to reach its full size? Between 10 and 20 weeks.) • Make Rosh Hashanah decorations, or facsimiles of happy family mem- bers, using Crayola Model Magic. You can find this modeling material at most craft shops. It is easier to work with than many of the other molding doughs, and you will be able to create lots of cool decora- tions for your table. ❑ wishes to thank the fewish community for its generous support in assisting us --- to alleviate hunger.
