"The Tri-Cities Jewish Communities donated the Sefer Torah to the Danto home." But when the Torah arrived, it was in need of $3,000 worth of restoration work as well as a new cover. The costs were all donated in honor of Boykansky. "When he heard it was being dedicated in his honor, he beamed from ear to ear," Rabbi Rabin says. "The one thing he asked was that the Torah have the names of his parents on the cover because of his tremendous love for them." Boykansky chose the design,' style and blue color of the velvet Torah cover, which reads: "In loving memory of Harry and Fannie Boykansky." "The Torah is a beautiful bridging of generations to something that is eternal," Rabbi Rabin says. "The first time I saw the Torah, I was overjoyed," Boykansky says. "Especially because it had my parents' names on it. I almost cried." Colleen Higgins, assistant adminis- trator at Danto, says, "He is very proud of the Torah. It is so nice to see a smile on his face." Although the Torah has been used on Shabbat since its official dedication last winter, this is the first Rosh Hashanah it will be read at Danto. "Right now, we take the Torah out on Shabbos and on Monday afternoons, when we sing shul songs and everybody •is given change to put in the pushke [charity box]," Rabbi Rabin says. "We carry it around and Ira is always there, and he lovingly kisses and cherishes the Torah. The Torah gave him a new lease on life." Tony Abela, Danto administrator, sees the new Torah as having "truly made a difference in Ira's life. The opportunity for the Torah to be dedi- cated on behalf of Ira helped him to be more comfortable that he is _very much a part of the Jewish faith," Abela says. "With the Torah, he can be reminded on a daily basis." For Boykansky, the dedication of the Torah in his honor is one more step in his immersion within the Detroit Jewish community. "His life and his spirit are so a part of this Jewish community," Sandra Boykansky says. "And I've always been in awe of how wonderful the Jewish community has been to him." Says Ira Boykansky, "I am very, very happy the Torah is here. I can't wait for the Torah be used on Rosh Hashanah." Ei
