who began learning her craft while
earning her degree at Oberlin College
in Ohio.
After working as a lighting assistant
on many New York shows, she landed
her first job as chief lighting designer
on a play called Pack of Lies, starring
Rosemary Harris. From there her list
of credits grew, encompassing opera,
ballet and theater.
Her Broadway work includes
Beauty and the Beast and The Sweet
Smell of Success; both earned her a
Tony nomination. Other credits are

My Fair Lady, Seussical: The Musical,
Gypsy and Someone Who'll Watch Over
Me. She also designed the lighting for
the HBO specials Mambo Mouth and
Side-O-Rama.
Katz's new project on Broadway is
the Flower Drum Song, scheduled to
open at the Virginia Theatre in New
York City on Oct. 17. This version,
featuring the original songs by
Rodgers & Hammerstein, stars Lea
Salonga, who introduced the role of
Kim in Miss Saigon.
As for Aida's road company at the
Fisher, Katz says, "The show's in very
good shape" and doesn't need any
more of her help. "I think the Detroit
audience will love it." 0

he Fisher Theatre is about
to begin its 41st year of
bringing prime theater to
Detroit. The 2002-2003 series con-
sists of seven hit shows, including
Tony Award-winning Broadway
musicals and plays.
The series begins with Aida, run-
ning Sept. 11-Oct. 5. The Grammy
Award-winning score by Elton John
and Tim Rice tells the classic Verdi
opera's tragic love story.
Running Oct. 22-Nov. 10 is 42nd
Street, the Tony Award winner for
best musical revival in 2001. Its a
splashy song-and-dance production.
The Tale of the Allergist's WO., star-
ring Valerie Harper, runs Nov. 5-24.
Written by Charles Busch, its the
story of Marjorie Taub, a Jewish
New Yorker going through a mid-
life crisis. A strangely familiar visitor
arrives and wreaks havoc in her life.
Some Like It Hot, featuring veter-
"an actor Tony Curtis, runs Dec. 3-
22. With music by Jule Styne and
lyrics by Bob Merrill, its a comedy
about two musicians who disguise
themselves as women.
Arturo Brachetti, a quick-change
artist, will appear Jan. 14-Feb. 2,
2003. Brachetti changes costumes
with astonishing speed and trans-
forms into 100 characters.
Cats, the Andrew Lloyd Webber
musical classic, runs Feb. 4-23, 2003.
One of the longest-running
Broadway hits, it won seven Tony
Awards, including best musical score.
Porgy and Bess, the story of a crip-
pled beggar, Porgy, and his doomed
love affair with the beautiful Bess,
runs March 11-30, 2003. George
Gershwin's classic musical score
includes such numbers as
"Summertime" and "It Ain't
Necessarily So." 0
