support for, the victims of Sept. 11, by
joining your rabbis at one of the two
memorial services that will be taking
place in our community that evening.
There will be a service held at
Temple Israel at 7 p.m. on Wednesday,
Sept. 11, co-sponsored by the
Michigan Board of Rabbis and the
West Bloomfield Clergy Association,
and one held at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek in Southfield, also at 7 p.m., co-
sponsored by the MBOR and the cler-
gy associations of Farmington Hills
and Southfield.
The Michigan Board of Rabbis is
also asking you to light a yahrtzeit can-
dle in your home in memory of the
victims of Sept. 11. The Jewish funeral
homes of our community have kindly
donated 3,024 yahrtzeit candles that
will be distributed to area congrega-
tions and can be obtained by calling
your local synagogue.
We are asking that these candles be
lit on Sept. 11. Alternatively, we also
suggested lighting candles on the
Hebrew date of the memorial, 23 Elul,
which began this year on erev Shabbat,
Aug. 30:
Because we know the requests for
these candles will exceed the supply
each congregation will have, you
may purchase your own yahrtzeit
candle and ask your synagogue for a
specially designed label to be affixed
to the candle. The congregations will
have an unlimited supply of these
labels
These are my three prescriptions for
5763. Not as profound as "Torah, wor-
ship and deeds of loving-kindness,"
but important, nonetheless.
Please join the rabbis of our com-
munity in making a difference in our
world by supporting Israel and
America in our mutual war against ter-
rorism. May this year, 5763, be a hap-
pier and a sweeter year than the one
that came before.-0
