two children, belonged to two syna-
gogues before changing to the Shul
several years ago. "This is home. I
Finally found a place where we
belong," she said.
"It's exciting to see this new beau-
tiful building," she said while look-
ing around the Shul's unfinished
interior. "It's a good feeling to be a
part of the Shul, a place where you
don't feel like an outsider."

Not Just A Shul

The 40-acre Chabad-Lubavitch
Campus of Living Judaism will
include the Shul; the Jack and
Miriam Shenkman Educational
Center that will house the Michigan
Jewish Institute, a four-year accredit-
ed college now operating in Oak
Park; and the Emma Lazaroff
Schaver Library.
The campus will also house the
Meer Family Friendship Center,
which will include the Daniel B.
Sobel Friendship House, the Ferber
Kaufman Lifetown Center and the
Morris and Sybil Fenkell Volunteer
Club. The Shul is the fii-st building
to be ready for occupancy.

The Shul was made possible
through major donors: Martin and
Phyllis Abel of West Bloomfield;
Emma Lazaroff Schaver of
Southfield; Jack and Miriam
Shenkman of Farmington Hills;
George and Vivian Dean of
Bloomfield Hills; Lois Nichamin of
Miami and her late husband, Larry
Nichamin; Doreen Hermelin of
Bingham Farms and her late hus-
band, David Hermelin; and the late
Norman and Esther Allan.
The land for the campus was pur-
chased through the Lubavitch
Foundation.
"The Shul was built with the idea
of outreach for all the unaffiliated
who are not very involved in
Judaism," says Rabbi Shemtov.
"The Shul is for every Jew and
therefore everyone is welcome. No
affiliation is necessary," he says.
"It's a place where black hatters
meet blue jeaners," says congregant
Jack Wolfe, 42, of West Bloomfield.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
services are free at the Shul, but reg-
istration is required. Call (248) 788-
4000 or visit the Web page at:
