Ben's Vegas became
that ... By the time
the early 1960s rolled
around, Las Vegas
had become a great
town ... with around
64,500 residents ...
The hotels in the
1950s and 1960s
cost little to stay there ... Maybe $5 a day
... A show with Frank Sinatra and Jackie
Gleason, or even Dean Martin and Jerry
Lewis, cost you $5.50 a person ... And
this also included a prime rib dinner
with champagne ... Buffets in those days
cost 50 cents ... When the Rat Pack was
at the Sands, it was only $6.50 to see them.
Las Vegas at one time was controlled
by the mob ... who must be given
credit ... They treated the guests and
their help very well.
People who worked in the hotels in
those early days knew you by your name
... Everything in the hotel, including the
gyms, were practically free of charge.
Today, the hotels are owned by corpo-
rations who have made the hotels too
big ... The service leaves much to be
desired ... and you're not known by your
name ... just your credit card numbers._
Shows cost too much ... and the buf-
fets are far from what they used to be.
No place else are there billion-dollar
mind-boggling hotels that keep going up
... like Sheldon Adelson's $1.5 billion
Venetian that was built in 1999 where the
wonderful Sands once stood ... or so
much entertainment ... or such great food.
So much to see So much to do ...
The Strip is now endless as it keeps
growing and growing ... The Tropicana
is no longer at the end ... and down-
town Vegas isn't too far anymore.
All in all, Las Vegas is still one of the
greatest tourist attractions in the world
... Those who have never been there are
missing much of a lifetime.
OLDIE BUT GOODIE Dept. ...
At a posh Las Vegas casino, a blackjack
dealer and a player with a 13 count in
his hand are arguing about whether or
not it is appropriate to tip the dealer.
The player says, "When I get bad
cards, it's not the dealer's fault: And
when I get good cards, the dealer obvi-
ously has nothing to do with that either,
so why,should I tip him?" •
The dealer replies, "When you eat at
a restaurant do you tip the waiter?"
"Yes," the gambler concedes.
"Well then, he serves you food, and
whether its good or bad isn't up to him.
By the same token, I'm serving you
cards, so you should tip me."
"Okay," says the gambler, "but the
waiter gives me what I ask for. I'll take
an 8." El
