Great Role Models

"Our first goal is to teach Torah," says
Rabbi Sobel. "We encourage everyone,
on their level. Whether they start to
check Arutz Sheva [an Israeli news Web
site] or make aliyah [immigrate to
Israel]. Everyone can change and grow."
"They are great role models," says
Akiva principal Rabbi Yigal Tsaidi about
Kollel Torah Mi'Tzion members. "They
develop a close relationship with the stu-
dents. It's good for them [the students]
to see people learning all day long."
Although based at Akiva and affiliat-
ed with it, Kollel Torah Mi'Tzion is an
entirely separate organization. In addi-
tion to teaching salaries from Akiva, the
program is funded by grants from the
Fisher Foundation, the Wolfson

Foundation and the Shostak Family
Foundation. Support also comes from
the Young Israel of Oak Park and the
Young Israel of Southfield synagogues.
A dinner held in May, attended by an
eclectic mix of 200 members of Detroit's
Jewish community, helped raise addi-
tional monies needed to run the pro-
gram. As with all branches of Kollel
Torah Mi'Tzion, the Detroit program is
funded solely by the local community in-
which it operates.
"The program really came together
this past year," says Dr. Phillip
Goldmeier of Southfield, local president
of the organization, who was pleased
with the success of the first dinner. Dr.
Goldmeier hopes that in the coming
year, Kollel Torah Mi'Tzion will reach
out beyond the city's Orthodox popula-
tion. He wants the broader Detroit
Jewish community to experience the
kollel's educational programs, especially
those focusing on "the importance of
Israel in our daily lives and for our
future.
"The chemistry's right; the couples
really connect with the community," Dr.
Goldmeier says. "They teach us and
become our friends." ❑
