Axelrod's brother, works as the Detroit
Federations' Annual Campaign director.
"It's a very special program," said
Julie Zuckerman, who graduated from
the Drachler program in April 2001.
A graduate of the University of
Maryland, she works in the Detroit
Federation's Israel and Overseas
Department.
"Not being from here, I was astound-
ed at the level of the support we received
from the community," Zuckerman said.
'At our pro [professional] seminars, lay
people and professionals from the area
would really 'lay it on the line' — tell us
what they do, the good and the bad, the
problems."
Among those leading pro seminars
last year were Robert Aronson,
Federation chief executive officer;
Marvin Krislov, U-M vice president and
general counsel; and Judy Lax, endow-
ment director at the Jewish Federation
of Washtenaw County.
Presenters often pose hypothetical sit-

management, community organization,
social policy and evaluation, or interper-
sonal practice.
Kari Alterman, who graduated from
the program in 1997, directs
Federation's community outreach and
education department.
"There's a sense of competition in
other programs. Here, we
look out for each other,"
she said.

we are all feeling quite optimistic about
continued growth in the program,"
Axelrod said.
Who should apply to the program?
"Someone with a passion for the
Jewish community and Israel; someone
who is involved and excited about all
facets of the community, in Jewish core
values and in real life," Contorer said.
Added Alterman: "Ws. not for the
unmotivated."
Axelrod and Rachel Weiss, who assists
her in an administrative capacity, are
"taking the Drachler program to a new
level," Alterman said.
According to U.S. News and World
Report, Michigan's School of Social
Work is the No.1-ranked school of its
type in the United States, Axelrod said.
"The competition is stiff for a slot in
the graduate school of social work," she
said. "I'm trying to do the same for the
Drachler program — to make it the pre-
eminent school of Jewish communal
service in the country." ❑
