Emanu-El Installs
New Leadership

Temple Emanu-El has installed new lay
leadership for the coming year.
The new officers are: president, Bruce
Gordon; vice presidents, Robert Olender,
Sheldon Klein, Elayne Steinhardt, Jo
Strausz Rosen, Elizabeth Zerwekh; secre-
tary-treasurer, Elaine C. Driker; financial
secretary, Alan Kessler; immediate past
president, Beth Applebaum.
The new board of trustees consists of
Lindy Buch, Howard Collens, Frederick
Frank, Eric Goldstein, Judith Greenwald,
Marjorie Katz, Aron Kominars, Sheri
Loeb, Arleen Miller, Sandy Nickerson,
Fern Onickel, Jennifer Wolin Patterson,
Arnold Portner, Gerald Robbins, Susan
Sherbow, Jacob Shimansky, Debra
Holzman Silver, Julie Zussman.
The auxiliary leaders are: brother-
hood, Alan Schindler; sisterhood,
Barbara Klein; EMES, Lillian Fox.

Shaarey Zedek
Hosts 9-11 Service

An interfaith service is planned for 7
p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek Southfield,
commemorating the first anniversary of
the tragic events that occurred Sept. 11,
2001.
Ten synagogues and churches from
throughout metropolitan Detroit, as well
as multiple community organizations,
will participate.
Themes of solidarity and hope will be
conveyed through songs of inspiration
performed by synagogue and church
professional choirs and youth choirs,
speakers, a candle-lighting ceremony for
the victims of 9-11, selected responsive
readings and an opportunity to honor
local heroes.
The community is invited at no
charge.

Judaism Class
Teaches Traditions

The introduction to Judaism course at
Temple Israel will consist of 11 classes. In
addition, there will be an informative trip
to the Holocaust Museum in West
Bloomfield.
The classes will be held at the temple
on Tuesdays, 7:30-9:30 p.m. Oct. 8-Dec.
24.
There are six textbooks required with
a cost of $50. The cost of the course is
$80 for individuals and $100 for couples.
