MSZ began its mission to educate the
38,000 students at U-M by draping
lecture halls with flyers containing
revealing quotes from Islamic leaders.
One cited an April 4 comment by
Sheik Muhammad Sayyed Tantawi,
the top Egyptian cleric at Al Azhar
University. 'Every martyrdom opera-
tion against any Israeli, including
children, women and teenagers, is a
legitimate act, according to [Islamic]
religious law," it read.
Many MSZ activists believe the
war in Israel is rooted in religious
fundamentalism, and that politics
and religion are one and the same in
the Arab world.
The group stands against the
establishment of a Palestinian state
alongside Israel. They devised the
slogan, "Create a Palestinian state,
create another Afghanistan."
MSZ members feel the current
Palestinian leadership seeks a state
that will serve as a "contiguous base
of terrorism" against Israel. They fear
creating a Palestinian state will legit-
imize and strengthen the militant
Palestine Liberation Organization —
and its quest to destroy Israel.
MZA's right-wing stance is
attracting Jews as well as those from
the former Soviet Union and conser-
vatives on campus, according to
organizers. Membership stands at
20, but more are expected because
the organization was launched dur-
ing the spring term when most stu-
dents were away.
The group emphasizes the impor-
tance of training future leaders in
Israeli activism. In fact, the group is
sending four students to the August
2002 Hasbara Fellowships seminar,
an educational summer trip spon-
sored by the Israeli Foreign Ministry
and Aish HaTorah.
Future U-M students are also
excited about MSZ. Yechiel
Krupnik, 19, of Windsor is a hard- -
line Zionist who plans on spending
next year in Israel. Upon his return,
he is interested in attending U-M.
"I plan on being an active member
of MSZ. I think the group represents a
great channel through which I can help
educate others about Israel," he said. Cl]
