Last year, 85 students took
courses in Hebrew language and 67
enrolled in a course on Judaism.
Each time Dr. Stauter-Halsted
teaches her course on the Holocaust,
it draws 50-60 students. She is one
of the organizers of the program's
annual conference on the Holocaust
for high school teachers and is plan-
ning a tour to Eastern Europe.
"We have high school teachers
who want to see the death camps,
and I speak Polish and know the
camps and the countryside," she
says.

Jennifer Epstein
Rule, a 1990 MSU
graduate, is a geriatric
social worker at the
Harriett and Ben Teitel
Jewish Apartments in
Oak Park and teaches
at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek's
Hebrew High School
in West Bloomfield.
An undergraduate sociology
major at MSU, she also received a
certificate in Jewish Studies.
After graduation, she worked as

"She's a phenomenal professor,"
Rule says. "There weren't any profes-
sors specifically in the Jewish Studies
Thematic Program, which is what it
was called when I went there. She
was chair of the Women's Studies
department, and it was a course I'll
never forget."
Rule says she's kept in touch with
MSU. "My husband and I just went
to Saugatuck, and I made him go by
East Lansing and look at the new
Hillel building." El
