A graduate of the University of Maryland, she works in the Detroit Federation's Israel and Overseas Department. "Not being from here, I was astound- ed at the level of the support we received from the community," Zuckerman said. 'At our pro [professional] seminars, lay people and professionals from the area would really 'lay it on the line' — tell us what they do, the good and the bad, the problems." Among those leading pro seminars last year were Robert Aronson, Federation chief executive officer; Marvin Krislov, U-M vice president and general counsel; and Judy Lax, endow- ment director at the Jewish Federation of Washtenaw County. Presenters often pose hypothetical sit- management, community organization, social policy and evaluation, or interper- sonal practice. Kari Alterman, who graduated from the program in 1997, directs Federation's community outreach and education department. "There's a sense of competition in other programs. Here, we look out for each other," she said. According to U.S. News and World Report, Michigan's School of Social Work is the No.1-ranked school of its type in the United States, Axelrod said.
