"Many of the Jewish students we see are apathetic in their practical approach to Judaism, but deep down, we find they're very, very interested in what it means to be Jewish," says Rabbi Avraham Jacobovitz, whose Oak Park-based Machon L'Torah- The Jewish Learning Network of Michigan operates the Jewish Resource Center in Ann Arbor. JRC serves students from all streams of Judaism. The most-pressing issue on their minds is a successful college agenda, providing little time for anything else, says Rabbi Jacobovitz, known as "Rabbi J" to students and friends. "It's crucial that we reach out to them because they're at a juncture where the decisions they make will determine the way they go in life," he says. Rabbi J also serves as a rabbinic adviser to other Michigan universities, including Michigan State, Wayne State and Western Michigan. He works in concert with campus Hillels, he says, to "enhance the opportunities for Jewish learning and Jewish life." "Even for the most firmly committed, maintaining a strong Jewish connection on today's college campus is difficult," says Richard Moline of Koach College Outreach, a project of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.
