at events at the Mandell Berman Hillel
Center and other campus locations, said
Michael Brooks, U-M Hillel executive
director. Michigan's Hillel serves as the
umbrella body for more than 30 student
organizations, including a weekly issues
forum read by 15,000 people a week,
intramural sports teams, Israel advocacy
programs and a Jewish film festival.
"More than 2 percent of all of the
Jewish college students in North America
are at the University of Michigan,"
Brooks said. 'And each year, more of
them come here because of the U of M's
reputation for being a great place for
Jewish students."
Michigan's Hillel also hosts a confer-
ence on the Holocaust, conducts Reform,
Conservative, Orthodox and Humanistic
services and offers a kosher meal program
at lunch and dinner.

Focus On Israel

The Hillels at both Michigan and
Michigan State will be focusing on Israel
this year, with MSU bringing in speakers
to educate students about the situation in
the Middle East as well as to "celebrate
Israel" and U-M planning a year-long ini-
tiative.
MSU also will be hosting a leadership
retreat for Jewish students from around
the state, bringing together leaders from
large and small schools. Weinstein of
MSU Hillel is developing the project for
October with Weiss, her counterpart in
programming at Hillel of Metro Detroit.
"We're trying to establish a network of
students, and we're hoping by doing
activities to bring them together, we can
help them form a network of their own,"
Weinstein said.
Hillel, she said, "keeps [students] con-
nected to Judaism and helps them figure
out how it fits into their lives." ❑
