#25) Here's a bit of information you
likely have been wondering about
for years, but may not have known
whom to ask. Many times on Jewish
documents you will see the Hebrew
letters bet, hay and bet at the top.
What does it mean?
It's an abbreviation for Baruch
HaShem, or "Praise God." Another
item you may often see is bet, ayin,
hey, which stands for Bezrat
HaShem, or "with God's help."

#26) One of the most mistranslated
words — so get a bit of education
here and now — is "goy." This
Hebrew word is not, in itself, a
derogatory term. It means "nation,"
and in no way refers negatively to
gentiles.

Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi
Menachem Mendel Schneerson,
"Education that is merely concerned
with the transmission of informa-
tion is doomed to failure. It must
serve the greater and more noble
purpose of cultivating the student's
moral character."

#28) The first Jewish "school" in the
United States came with the estab-
lishment of Congregation Sheraith
Israel in New York City. When in
1729 the synagogue erected its facil-
ity, it asserted that the building was
"to be used also as a study hall for
pupils." Soon to follow with syna-
gogue-schools were Philadelphia in
1759, Newport in 1770, Charleston
in 1801 and Cincinnati in 1824.

#31) According to the Talmud, in
Shabbat 119b, "The world abides
only because of the breath of little
children learning Torah."
