Pakistan, and that thought was shared
with relatives and friends attending a
memorial service for his son.
"They may have silenced Danny's
voice, but not his spirit," said his dad,
recalling the newspaperman's enduring
interest in meeting new people and get-
ting their points of view.
"The legacy of Danny's lifelong
`talking with strangers' will be forever
in our hearts."
That attitude, combined with a
book idea by the late journalist's
mother, Ruth, led to At Home in the

World: Collected Writings from The Wall
Street journal (Wall Street Journal
Books; $24).
Helene Cooper, the late writer's friend
and co-worker, edited the anthology,
which was rushed into print by newspa-
per administrators. She selected some
50 articles from 200 written by Pearl,
grouped them into chapters and added
a short biography of the late writer; his
father's eulogy; a foreword by Pearl's
widow, Mariane; and some brief recol-
lections of her own.

"Danny and I used to talk about how -
we both wanted to write books," says
Cooper, who met her friend when they
were reporters at the Journal office in
Atlanta. "When I look at this book, I
think that Danny was writing it all along,
and I'm proud to see it in bookstores."
"My favorite pieces change every day,"
Cooper says, "but ultimately, they're the
funny stories — from one about a bust

of Elvis' head to another about the
largest Persian carpet in the world.
"Danny did a wealth of serious and
heavy-hitting stories, but I hoped that
people [would dwell on the funny
pieces] and share a smile."
Other articles on the light side include
the story of actress Kim Basinger's
investment in a small American town, a
search for romance using the Internet,
and the tale of a missing violin, which
detoured to Detroit. On the more seri-
ous side are pieces about an earthquake
and its aftermath, ethnic cleansing and
Taliban smuggling.
Regardless of tone, each article cap-
tures Pearl's interest in talking to
everyday people affected by larger
events. Presented together, the pieces
show his insights into tracking leads
for articles, finding unique stories and
exploring viewpoints that represent
different cultures.
