The songs Feinstein performs with the
Israel Symphony were arranged by jazz
pianist Alan Broadbent, who has done
arrangements for Natalie
Cole, Marian McPartland
and others.
"Everything Alan wrote
was terrific for orchestra,"
said Michael Slatkin;
principal player in the
Israel Philharmonic's
French horn section.
Slatkin, a native of
Long Island, said in a
phone conversation that
Feinstein was great to
work with.
"Over the 11 years I've
been with the orchestra,
we've probably done 20
concerts with pop singers
from the US, Israel,
Brazil and France," said
Slatkin, who is not related to National
Symphony Orchestra director Leonard
Slatkin. "With Michael, we felt a
tremendous connection we didn't feel
with any other people," he said.
"But it's not just Michael who's
great -- it's the people who work with
him. There were no mistakes in these
arrangements; there were no changes
whatsoever. We couldn't believe these
arrangements had never been per-
formed before."
Slatkin, who is married to the
daughter of the IPO's pianist, has two
daughters, ages 6 and 4.
"We avoid crowds," he said, refer-
ring to the ongoing specter of vio-
lence in Israel. "We never take them
to the beach now, or any open place
where it would be hard to protect
them," he said.

member or with an orchestra member."
Despite the quantum increase in
violence in Israel, the IPO still per-
forms, Slatkin said — but with heavy
security and more frequent schedule
changes.
Conductor Zubin Mehta of the IPO
has been quoted as saying 50 percent
or more of foreign artists scheduled to
perform with the IPO in Israel have
canceled due to security concerns.
But "people still come to concerts,"
said Slatkin. "We have a 3,000-seat hall
in Tel Aviv, and it's frequently sold out.
"Part of the orchestra just had a gig
in an open market in Jerusalem. They
closed the street and had heavy securi-
ty all around the perimeter, but there

great courage. This extraordinary
organization has developed social pro-
grams that place Israeli and Arab teens

lish personal friendships to give the
next generation the leadership capabil-

Feinstein has pledged a portion of
the proceeds from sales of the CD to
Seeds of Peace, which runs an interna-
tional camp in the Maine woods as
well as multi-ethnic programs in Israel.

High Security
The IPO's Tel Aviv concert hall is
guarded by 24-hour security, includ-
ing bomb-sniffing dogs, said Slatkin.
"You can't get into the building dur-
ing the day unless you're an orchestra

were no incidents.
"We don't want any trouble; we just
want to perform."
A September tour of Australia and
Taipei is still on the IPO schedule.
The orchestra's next appearance in
the United States is set for January
2003. Whether or not Feinstein will
perform with the group at that time is
still undecided, said Dan Fortune, the
singer's publicist.
Feinstein was philosophical about the
postponement. "The music is timeless,
and will always be there," he said.
