Jerusalem/JTA — Israel plans to
import 1 billion cubic meters of
water from Turkey during the next
20 years. During a meeting between
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and the
visiting Turkish energy minister
Tuesday, the two nations signed a
deal for Israel to import some 20
million cubic meters a year.
This amounts to about 2.5 percent
of Israel's annual fresh water con-
sumption, the Israeli daily Hdaretz
reported. The paper said the deal
would be worth between $800 mil-
lion to $1 billion over the period of
the contract.

Budapest/JTA — The number of Jews
living in Hungary is "drastically high-
er" than the 13,000 reported in last
year's census, according to Hungarian
Jewish leader Peter Tordai.
A Hungarian newspaper also
reported that sociologist Andras
Kovacs estimated that the number of
Jews currently living in Hungary is
between 100,000 and 120,000.

Palestinian
Rips Arafat

Gaza City/JTA — A Palestinian leg-
islator accused Yasser Arafat of
bribery.
According to the Israeli daily
Hdaretz, which cited an interview in
the weekly publication of the Muslim
Brotherhood in Jordan, Mu'awiyeh
Masri blasted Arafat and other top
Palestinian Authority officials.
Masri accused them of corruption,
misuse of P.A. funds and acting out
of "personal interests, not for the
good of the Palestinian people."
