In Detroit,
the independ-
ent, all-volun-
teer Detroit
Maccabi Club
recruits the
coaches and
athletes.
While sports
are the major
draw for the
teens, the JCC
Maccabi Games
also have strong
social and
Jewish compo-
nents. Social
activities are
held each
evening during
the games, and
each team is
required to do a community service or
"mitzvah project" during the year.
The Detroit Maccabi Club was a
major proponent of having the
Maccabi- Games' experience extend over
Shabbat. Athletes, housed with volun-
teer host families in each city, would
spend the Sabbath with their hosts, and
synagogues would schedule special pro-
grams or recognition at religious servic-
es. The practice ended in recent years
in an effort to shorten the length of the
games and lessen the burden on the
host community and host families.
The games have enjoyed an interna-
tional prestige, with foreign delegations
of Jewish teens participating, led by the
Israeli team. In 1990, when Detroit
held its opening ceremonies at the
then-new Palace of Auburn Hills, 10
foreign teams were represented, includ-
ing Israel, Russia, Great Britain,
Australia and Latin American countries.
This year, the Polish team will be
hosted by Detroit Maccabi families for
a week before going to the JCC
Maccabi Games.
The Detroit Maccabi teams will have_
a mandatory meeting for parents and
athletes at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at
the Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield. Rules, regulations and uni-
forms will be distributed.
