classical violinist whose
mother composes pop music
in Russia and a classical con-
ductor whose son performs
rock riffs in Israel will appear together
for the first time in the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra's "Tchaikovs
Spectacular," two evenings of music by
one of the most accessible of classical
composers.
String player Philip Quint
and maestro Uriel Segal will
be featured artists Friday
and Saturday, Aug. 9 and
10, at the Meadow Brook
Music Festival.
The first evening features
Tchaikovsky's Polonaise,

The violinist was introduced to his
instrument by his grandparents, who
also immigrated to America. He

"The programs include the
most popular works ever
written for violin," says
Quint, 28, who recently
appeared with the Flint Symphony
Orchestra and soon will open the
new season for the Kalamazoo
Symphony Orchestra.
"The Tchaikovsky concerto and
Marche Slave are probably the most
informed works in the world. They're
exciting for me every time, and I find
something new in them every time."
Quint, whose upcoming tour
schedule will reach from the
National Gallery in Washington,
D.C., to the Vatican, has been play-
ing the violin since he was 5 years
old. A former student at Moscow's
Special Music School for the Gifted,
he decided to go professional when
he was 13.
"The violin expresses my emotions

"My grandparents had very good
voices, but the war destroyed their
plans for [becoming performers],"
says Quint, who grew up learning
Yiddish songs from them.
"My grandfather became a wonder-
ful engineer on a secret job that very
few Jewish people could get. He was
appointed to create the first top-
secret Soviet atomic warships.
Quint's mother, Lora Kvint, started
out as a classical pianist — but it was
pop music that appealed to her more.
"She met a famous Russian pop
star who became a friend of hers and
asked her to write a song for him,"
