to Slop," she said.
Apparently, the customers were
having as much fun as Elizabeth.
They came, and they didn't stop
coming.
"I would just call out to them
[passersby] to come to my sale,"
Elizabeth said. "And it didn't matter
what religion they were, or whether
you know them, or what they do
[for a living]. They were nice and
caring."
Many shoppers didn't come with
anything but dollar bills, and they told
Elizabeth, "It's fine, we don't need the
change,'" she recalled. "One girl — I
think she was probably a teenager
because she looked older — was in-
line skating, then returned [to make a
donation] when she learned where the
money was going."
Elizabeth said she "hopes that every-
one enjoyed what_they got, and know-
ing that they did a very good thing.
"I liked this [sale] because I made
other people do something good while
they were getting something fun at the
sale and I could tell they were think-
ing about where the money was going
to go," Elizabeth said. "I mean, they
were totally thinking of it."
After the sale, her mom, Debbie
Kirshner, looked for the local office of
the JNF.
None exists, she discovered, but
learned that representatives from
Cleveland (which oversees fund-raising
and other activities in metro Detroit)
do occasionally come to Michigan.
She made a call, and Alexandra
Hirschkind, the JNF campaign associ-
ate for the Michigan and Ohio region,
came to visit the Kirshner home.
Elizabeth presented Hirschkind with
the $44.88 she raised. In appreciation,
Hirshkind gave her a framed 10-by-
12-inch certificate indicating a tree has
been planted in her honor in Israel.
The certificate hangs in the Kirshner
dining room.
Despite her business acumen,
Elizabeth said she doesn't plan on
becoming the next Bill Gates, of
Microsoft fame. When she grows up,
she wants to be a singer. She likes
rock, rap, hip-hop and anything by `N
Sync (and by the way, she said, lead
singer Justin Timberlake looked
"much better" before he cut off all his
curls).
Meanwhile, though, she is pleased
with the results of her yard sale, and
especially appreciative of the JNF
planting a tree in her honor.
"It made me happy," she said, "to
think of a tree planted even with all
the sadness there."
