Rabbi Kahn will talk about Kabbalah — its current popularity and how it brings students to a heightened sense of spirituality. His first public lecture will be 7 p.m. Aug. 8, at the Aish Center in downtown Birmingham. His talk is entitled "Clearing the Mist From the Mysticism." There is a $10 charge. On Friday night, Aug. 9, Rabbi Kahn will speak on "A Mystical Perspective on Theodicy" (bad things happening). Reb Ari, as he's known, is a writer as well as lecturer, and has just fin- ished his second book, Emanations. It contains essays on the Jewish holidays through the prism of rabbinical per- spective. His first book, Explorations, is a contemporary look at biblical issues and was compiled from the many articles he's written over the years for the aish.com Web site. Rabbi Kahn is married and has lived in Israel for the past 15 years. He received his rabbinical ordination from Yeshiva University in New York City, where he studied with Rabbi J.B. Soloveicheck. The class, which meets weekly from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Congregation Beth Shalom, is spon- sored by the Conservative Rabbis of Metropolitan Detroit. The institute provides four months of study on the basics of Conservative Judaism. Basic Hebrew is included. Rabbi David Nelson teaches the course assisted by Alicia Nelson.
