It's quick, it's easyl Unprecedented Gift The $122,000 matching donation was the largest gift ever given by the Foresters to a Michigan organiza- tion. The group was impressed by plans to build the Ferber Kaufman LifeTown, a state-of-the-art therapy center to be located at the Meer Family Friendship Center, on six wooded acres on Maple Road near Drake in West Bloomfield. The Friendship Circle plans to break ground for the new building this fall. The Daniel B. Sobel Counseling Program, also planned for the Friendship Center, provides the con- fidential guidance and support of a full-time therapist and rabbi to recovering addicts and their loved ones. At the annual dinner, the organi- zation also honored young volun- teers who quietly donate their time to the mitzvah of helping children with special needs. "We have the staff, God willing, we're going to have the building," said Rabbi Shemtov. "We have the volunteers, we have the community support, as evidenced by the amount of people who came to the dinner, and we're ready to go to the next level. We think that having all this infrastructure in place tells us that we'll be able to continue to make a tremendous impact on the commu- nity, and on the lives of children with special needs." Master of ceremonies for the annual dinner was Oak Park Rabbi E.B. "Bunny" Freedman, director of the Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network. Richard Bernstein, a blind attor- ney in Farmington Hills, spoke about the importance of having friends when growing up with a dis- ability, and about the importance of friendship in the scheme of therapy. Col. Jacob Goldstein said a prayer for both Americans and the Israeli soldiers. As chief chaplain of the New York Army National Guard, he served 60 days as chief chaplain for military personnel stationed at Ground Zero in New York City. ❑ Adoption Seminars Begin In August Alliance for Adoption will host com- munity-wide information seminars, for people interested in International or Domestic Adoption, the third Thursday of each month, 7-8:30 p.m. at the Jewish Family Service West Bloomfield office, 6960 Orchard Lake Rd., Suite 202. The next meeting will take place Thursday, Aug. 15. Prospective par- ents with questions about adoption are encouraged to attend. Alliance for Adoption is a division of Jewish Family Service of Metropolitan Detroit. It offers home studies for domestic and international adoption; child placement; pregnancy, infertility and post-placement counseling; and searches-reunions. All adoption servic- es are non-sectarian, and tailored to the individual needs of each member of the adoption triad. Alliance for Adoption is always accepting profiles of pre-adoptive par- ents interested in domestic adoption, including home studies, "dear birth- parent" letters, and photographs. Other seminars include a discussion with a representative from the Jewish Family & Children's Service of Greater Philadelphia, Oct. 6, and a workshop with Anne Liddicott, direc- tor of social services at Frank Adoption Center (specializing in Russian/Ukrainian adoption) of North Carolina, Nov. 16. For information or to confirm attendance, call Diane St. Peter, (248) 559-0117.
