(jelly-filled donuts) on Chanukah. But
years ago, the favorite holiday food
among East European Jews was retekh
salat, consisting of olives, onions, turnips
and the namesake, radishes, all fried in
goose fat.
So what does this have to do with the
long-lasting oil? Nothing, but all the
foods mentioned above were known to
be popular among Jews during the time
of Chanukah's hero, Judah Maccabee.

#26) Ever notice how many "kosher
pickles" aren't? That's because the term
"kosher pickle" actually refers to a pickle's
seasoning, specifically garlic. Jewish chefs
were the first to use the spice when mak-
ing pickles.

#29) You know Jews have lived in Israel
for thousands of years. What country
comes in second? Iraq, where Jews have
resided for more than 2,500 years.
When Iraqi Jews settled in the new
State of Israel, they were thrilled to find
date palm trees, just as they had known -
in Iraq.
If you would like to try your own date
patties from Iraq, try this:

1/4 cup chopped walnuts
I /4 cup flour
1/2 pound pitted dates
3 Tbsp. butter
Mix flour with walnuts and dates.
Melt butter in a frying pan, then add 1
Tbsp. to date mixture (save the rest for
later). Squeeze date mixture together and
roll until it's about 2" in diameter. Slice
into 1/4" patties. Flatten patties, then
place in frying pan (about 1 minute on
each side) and fry.

#30) One legend has it that Judah
Maccabee and his soldiers quickly rode
through villages while battling with
Syrians, during which time Jews would
quickly toss them a latke to give them
strength.

#31) Feeling insane? Try eating the
cooked skin of a chicken that died a nat-
ural death. (This remedy comes from
Jewish writings from Poland at the turn
