DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 248.539.3001 tTN Editor's Note: Jewish candidates seeking elective office this year are welcome to announce their candidacy in the-Jewish News. Joseph L. Stewart is running against Michelle Friedman Appel, Ezra Goldman, David M Gubow, Angela Diggs Jackson, Sam Konikow, Richard A. Levitt, Leonard C. Schwartz and Gil Whitney McRipley. Primary election day is Tuesday, Aug. 6 Attorney Joseph L. Stewart is seek- ing one of the two open seats in 45B District Court, serving Oak Park, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge and Royal Oak Town-ship. In private practice for more than 30 years, Stewart of Oak Park has experi- _ ence in mat- ters concern- Joseph L. Stewart ing children and parents in delinquency and abuse-neglect cases and also in crimi- nal trial and appellate work. He brings a background in general civil and family law and probate cases, serving as a court-appointed guardian ad litem, protecting the rights of sen- iors in guardianship and conservator- ial matters. Representing a badly abused spouse pro bono [without compensa- tion] in a 2000 divorce case, Stewart said he was able to set a Michigan precedent, allowing battered spouses to sue their husbands and obtain monetary damages within the divorce case. Stewart graduated from Mumford High School in Detroit, earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan and his juris doctor at Wayne State University Law School. As a young man, he worked at the St. Peter's Home For Boys. When Stewart first began prac- ticing at Wayne County Neighbor- hood Legal Services, he represented indigent clients. Stewart has campaigned on a plat- form of unification and inclusiveness for diverse ethnic and racial groups. Stewart believes a judge can use his position of influence on the bench to reach out to troubled families, espe- cially children and teens. His work in the courts throughout the years, especially the juvenile courts, has given him in-depth contact with families in crisis, he said. The candidate would take a no- nonsense approach toward those who infringe on citizens' safety and secu- rity. To Stewart, it will be a "top priori- ty to protect the rights of seniors to maintain dignified and secure lifestyles, and to keep our streets safe for our children," he said. "As we all know, strong communi- ties provide the structure in which to instill positive values in our chil- dren," Stewart said. Stewart said he would seek to cre- ate a relationship of respect between the court and the teenagers and young adults appearing before him. Stewart and his family, including wife Marti and their three teenaged children, have lived for 22 years in Oak Park. They are active members of the Mishkan Israel congregation in Oak Park, where Stewart has served on the board of directors. Stewart has coached girls and boys basketball at Yeshivat Akiva in Southfield.
