The Somerset Collection and Standard
Federal Bank will present "Detroit Live!"
featuring Jay Leno, host of The Tonight
Show, on Saturday,- Sept. 14, at the Fox
Theatre in Detroit.
The one-night benefit performance
for JVS is in celebration of its 60th
anniversary,. Each year, JVS serves
22,000 people from all walks of life in
metropolitan Detroit.
_JVS assists people with disabilities,.
older adults and at-risk elderly, the
unemployed and those seeking a career
change. It helps clients meet life chal-
lenges affecting their self-sufficiency by
providing counseling, training and sup-
port services.
The ramifications of Sept. 11 have
deeply affected local nonprofit organiza-
tions like JVS. Governmental priorities
have shifted. Both state and county gov-
ernments have cut mental health fund-
ing and social services to two of the
most vulnerable populations served by
JVS: those who are chronically mentally
ill and people with developmental dis-
abilities.
According to JVS President and CEO
Barbara Nurenberg, "This benefit will
enable JVS to continue to provide spe-
cialized services that help people reach
their full potential. This is particularly
meaningful for those who, because of
government cutbacks or the downturn
in the economy, are especially susceptible
and unable to speak for themselves."
Since 1941, JVS has provided employ-
ment services to youth and adults. It has
also developed employment programs
for people with developmental disabili-
ties or chronic mental illness to secure
and keep competitive jobs, whether in
sheltered workshops or in the communi-
ty.
In- 1997, JVS was selected by the city
of Detroit to operate Detroit's Work
Place, two full-service career centers that
offer one-stop employment and support
services for city residents and Detroit-
area employers.
Tickets for "Detroit Live!" with Jay
Leno are $250 for VIP seating, $200 for
premium seating, $100 for general seat-
