HELENE FREUND, 80, of Boca
Raton, Fla., died July 20, 2002. She
graduated from the New York
Academy of Dramatic
Arts and was signed,
at age 17, by the John
Powers Modeling
Agency in New York.
By the 1940s, Mrs.
Freund was under
contract to Columbia
Studios in Los
Angeles, using the
Helene
stage name Helene
Freund
Dix. During World
War II, she volun-
teered to entertain at many hospitals
with the USO and was an ongoing
cast member in a series of movies by
Columbia called Boston Blackies.
She was hired to do photographic
work for all the major car compa-
nies, Hudsons and many women's
specialty stores. She became a sought
after fashion coordinator and was the
first American fashion commentator
to work in Russia. Her work overseas
was aided by her being conversant in
Yiddish, French, Spanish, German
and Italian.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s,
Mrs. Freund worked for CKLW-TV
in Windsor on Bill Kennedy's
Showtime as Miss Gold Bell. She also
became a founding member of the
West Bloomfield Library, took an
active role as a board member of the
Michigan Association for
Emotionally Disturbed Children,
serving as treasurer and chairing
fund-raising committees. Her special
project was the annual Cinderella
Ball. She also began a series of mod-
eling classes for junior high school
girls at the Community house in
Birmingham.
Mrs. Freund was a member of
Temple Beth El from the time of her
moving to Detroit.
She is survived by her husband,
Richard Freund; son and daughter-
in-law, Robert and Suzy Freund of
California; daughters and sons-in-
law, Meredith and Howard West of
Hawaii, Frances and Kenneth
Steinman of Birmingham, Patricia
and Kenyon Olds of West
Bloomfield; grandchildren, Casandra
Olds, Jamie Olds, Joshua Steinman,
Amy Steinman and Lauren Freund.

Mr. Margolis was a supporter and
