"These statistics are evidence that more and more Jews are alienating themselves from Judaism," said Yigal Segal, executive director of the Jewish Literacy Foundation. The JLF has begun a campaign to educate Jews about their heritage and beliefs by providing every home, free of charge, with a Jewish library. The first book distributed by the\group, the 157-page Judaism in a Nutshell: Israel, by Shimon Apisdorf, will be sent to a thousand "marginally and unaffiliated Jews" across North America. The organization is also developing an interactive CD-ROM to be distrib- uted with the book. "Education is the most potent tool we possess," Segal said, "and a book focusing on the State of Israel and the current Israel-Palestinian conflict will appeal to Jews of all backgrounds who may now be looking for a way to reconnect with .their heritage." Apisdorf is the co-founder and edu- cational director of the JLF. He has written eight of the foundation's books, including other Judaism in a Nutshell volumes and the Jewish Holiday Survival Kit series.
