high school," she points out.
Boston is a funny place, with a lot
of Irish Catholic humor, she says,
while Washington was very dull. After
five years there, she suddenly felt that
she had to leave, like that feeling
when you just have to get your hair
cut and you do it the next day."
When asked if she could see herself
doing stand-up comedy, she says she
would be too chicken although she
enjoys the banter of questions and
answers after her readings. She
admits that there's nothing like a
public audience for humor and that
if she ever tried stand-up and it
worked, "they'd never get me off the
stage."
Zigman is working on a new novel, a
romantic comedy murder-mystery set in
Gloucester, Mass., and New York City.
"I'm not the kind of writer who
imagines huge other worlds. I enjoy
writing about the worlds I really
know," she says. "In my heart I'll
always be a single woman in New York
struggling with the issues that we
woman struggle with."

The author is a trial attorney in St.
Louis and the author of several novels.
Other Girls by Diane Ayres
