DISNEY'S BROADWAY TRIUMPH ON SALE TODAY! "DISNEY'S DONE IT AGAIN!" r -The New Yorke boisterous or very mellow or anything in between. Whatever I put into it, I get right back. JN: How do you compose? DK: I love to play the piano although I'm lousy at it, and sometimes songs come out that way. Sometimes songs come out when I have the saxophone in my hand. Sometimes songs come out in the shower or while I'm driv- ing. It's really like there's no rhyme or reason. I've learned to be sure to have a tape recorder ready when those times come. JN: Is there one song that you've written or performed that best expresses who you are? DK: One of the first songs I ever wrote as a recording artist was "Emily." I wrote it with two of my buddies when my goddaughter was born. She just celebrated her 15th birthday, and I thought I'd bring it back into the show because we haven't played it in quite some time. That song has a melody that peo- ple just connect with, and it's really resonating on the road. I'm like a family man even though I don't have a family myself I love my nieces and godchildren. I come from a real Jewish family with a mother always getting togeth- er with the kids and food. That still continues. "AIDA ZINGS! Visually sumptuous. Hurtling action, powerful pop-rock music. DAllLING!" -Nelson Pressley, The Washington Post Mama Koz in the kitchen: Move over Mrs. Letterman. The 'Other' Dave's Mom Dave Koz loves his mother's recipe for mandel bread and includes it on his Web site, wwvv.davekoz.com , where her other recipes also can be found. "I come from a real Jewish family with a mother always getting together with the kids and food," he says. Mama Koz's Mandel Bread 3 eggs bb 1 cup of sugar 3/4 cup of canola oil 1 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. of almond extract 2 3/4 cups of flour 1 tsp. of baking soda pinch of salt to taste 1 to 2 cups of walnuts Using an electric mixer, combine all ingredi- ents, adding the walnuts last. Spray cookie sheet with Pam and maje two long logs. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Bake at 350 degtees for 25 minutes. After 5 minutes, the logs should have spread. Using a knife, *- reshape them. The logs will lose their shape and need reshaping a couple more times. After baking, cool and slice. Place the slices flat on a cookie sheet and again sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Brown on both sides (about 5-8 minutes) and then cool. JN: Have you ever composed any Jewish-themed music? DK: I made two Christmas records (December Makes Me Feel This Way and A Smooth Jazz Christmas) because Christmas, to me, is less about the religious aspect and more about time together with family. There's something that happens in the Christmas time period that brings people together. That's something that I've always loved even though I grew up celebrating Chanukah. When we made the two recordings, my mom made me promise that I would record a Chanukah classic song. I did some research and talked to a rabbi and a cantor. All the songs I _ could come up with didn't feel appro- priate for the recordings, so I ended up writing one, "Eight Candles." It appears on both of the holiday CDs, and every time we do it live, it's always people's favorite song whether they're Jewish or not. JN: Have you ever performed in Israel? DK: I've been to Israel twice, but I've never performed there. My best friend from college was on a year of study abroad there, and I went to visit him for a couple of weeks. I stayed all that time in Israel. I went back about six months later and stayed a few days. BROADWAY'S TIMELESS LOVE STORY OPENS SEPTEMBER 12TH FISHER THEATRE I FOUR WEEKS ONLY!
