One Bedroom Summer Special

• Jewish War Veterans of the
United States of America/Department
of Michigan. How very sad that they
have had to beg for space in the corn-
munity.
• Racquetball and squash at the
Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit ("Parting
Shot," June 28, page 13). The "old
guys" can go elsewhere. Are seniors
being pushed around? You bet they
are. But remember, the wheel is
always turning. So let's get on the
ball and show our community what
being a real mentsh is.

Jim Blanchard's
Experience Counts
That the energetic Michigan
Attorney General Jennifer Granholm,
Democratic candidate for governor,
would bring in new ideas and new
perspectives is like the oft-quoted
"triumph of hope over experience."
Her much-repeated story of her
defining moment ("Who Will Lead
Michigan?" June 21, page 14), while
working with Amnesty International,
is wearing a little thin.
The new governor will face a fiscal
mess, massive retirements of key civil
servants, an exodus of term-limited
legislators, shrinking jobs, Medicare
increases, threatened pension funds
owing to accounting scandals, securi-
ty risks, bad roads and uneducated
unemployables, for starters.
With a ho-hum record as attorney
general, will a rookie fill the bill?
I don't think so, which is why I
support former Gov. Jim Blanchard.
He helped save Chrysler Corp., cre-
ated the Michigan Education Trust,
halved unemployment and led
Michigan in new manufacturing
investment. He has innovative pro-
grams for roads, health care, the
environment, education and job cre-
ation, and has proven his friendship
with our people time after time.
He's not afraid to answer questions
on tough problems and will not give
a "did not respond" to queries on
women's choice, school-tuition
vouchers, single-business tax enact-
ment, diversion of Great Lakes water
(Blanchard wrote the charter ban on
this) or making polluters pay.
Experience counts.
