the word chet, or sin. The more practi-
cal among us note that nuts can some-
times cause a tickle in the throat,
which can result in coughing, and one
needs to clearly state his prayers on the
High Holidays.

Fish Head: It may not sound like the
most appetizing vision: a fish head
staring up at you while you eat the
High Holiday meal.
But many Jewish families, even those
who are not particularly observant,
continue this tradition. Here's how it
came about. For thousands of years,
communities throughout the world,
Jew and gentile alike, have linked the
concept of productivity with a fish. By
placing the head of a fish on the table,
we are expressing our hopes for a pro-
ductive year of greatness. There is even
a special phrase the Shulchan Aruch
(Code of Jewish Law) teaches us to say
when we.first taste fish in the new
year: "May the coming year help us
achieve leadership among our fellow
man: may we be like the head and not
the tail."
There is an exception, however. If
you are having as guests Jews originally
from Iraq, don't even think of serving
them a fish head — or any part of the
fish. They note that the Hebrew word
for fish is dag, which sounds like
daaga, or "worry," which is the last
thing you need when you begin a new
year.
Challah With Birds: Long before the
"four-and-20 blackbirds" were served
up in a pie, a "dainty dish to set before
the king," Jews had covered their chal-
lahs, to be eaten just before Yom
Kippur, with the images of birds (no
real ones!).
This is because on Yom Kippur man
hopes that his prayers will be carried
heavenward with the same ease that a
birds flies up through the sky.
